Our Story

We Believe Everyone Can Grow Their Own Food

A simple idea — that growing food should be accessible, joyful, and something anyone can do, no matter where they live.

How It Started

From a Tiny Balcony to a Global Movement

YourFirstFoodGarden was born in 2020 on a small apartment balcony in Portland, Oregon. Founder Alex Rivera had just lost their job and needed a way to save money on groceries while maintaining sanity during lockdown.

With zero gardening experience, Alex planted a few tomato seeds in repuriced yogurt containers. Three months later, those first cherry tomatoes — warm from the sun, bursting with flavor — changed everything.

Friends and neighbors started asking for advice. Alex began documenting the journey online, sharing every mistake and triumph. The response was overwhelming: thousands of people wanted to grow their own food but didn't know where to start.

Today, YourFirstFoodGarden has helped over 50,000 beginners start their first food garden. We provide clear, actionable guidance that strips away the complexity and leaves only the joy of growing your own food.
